Greater Charitable Foundation
Providing support for Australian communities and charities
In 2011, the Greater Building Society established The Greater Charitable Foundation to support Australian communities and charities. The Greater Foundation aims to provide much needed funding for practical, life-changing initiatives which directly support families and communities.
Since 2012, the Greater Foundation has partnered with Starlight to help expand the reach of key Starlight programs to more sick kids across the community.
While Starlight has a presence in every children's hospital around Australia, there are still many seriously ill children in rural and regional hospitals who need the positive distraction of Starlight's programs. The Greater Foundation has helped fulfil this need by funding programs in regional NSW and south-east Queensland.

The Greater Foundation currently funds Starlight's regular visits to regional hospitals through the Starlight Connection program in NSW and the Gold Coast, which enables Starlight to reach kids in hospitals in Lismore, Maitland, Gosford, Armidale, Taree, Tamworth and the Gold Coast. The Greater Foundation has helped us reach more sick kids by funding a new vehicle to keep the program of Starlight fun on the road!
The Greater Foundation also helps to fund Starlight's permanent Starlight Express Room at the John Hunter Children's Hospital in Newcastle, where it also supports sick teens with its funding of our Livewire hospital workshops hospital workshops. A recent highlight was the Surfboard workshop run by local artists, where teens got to learn new skills and showcase their creative talents. Their works were then displayed at a popular local surf festival.
And thanks to the Greater Foundation, the teen-only Livewire Zine magazine goes to 3,500 young people each year. The Greater Foundation also share their expertise by contributing relevant news, tips and articles too.
The Greater Foundation staff also support Starlight by volunteering their time (and energy!) to help out with our hospital programs and providing pro bono assistance. At Christmas time, staff showed off their festive talents and hosted a special party with Christmas activities and gifts for kids and their families in the Starlight Express Room.
The opportunity to volunteer not only brightens the lives of sick kids, but also the volunteers.
"I had an amazing time volunteering with the Captains from Starlight! This is my second time volunteering and I would do it every month if I was able to. The smiles on the kids' faces are priceless and the Captains are just a blast to work with!" one staff member said.
Since the Partnership began in 2012, The Greater Charitable Foundation has committed to providing more than $945,000 of funding towards Starlight's programs and we are so grateful for their ongoing support.
