Endless Summer fun awaits for Will

WilliamWilliam was just 15 months old when he started to get sick. His mum Kylie remembers being so worried about her little boy who just wasn't getting better.

They'd been back and forth to the doctors but William's condition wasn't improving. The GP ran some blood tests and suddenly their world changed.

Will was rushed to emergency for immediate treatment and was then transferred to the children's hospital. Nothing prepared Kylie and dad Warwick for the devastating news that Will had Acute Myeloid Leukaemia.

William had surgery to enable his chemotherapy to start straight away. Sadly, during this time, William suffered kidney failure and had major complications with his heart and lungs. William's last chance was a specialised life support machine (called ECMO) which takes over heart and lung functions. Kylie said it was so frightening seeing William fight for his life.

Will ultimately spent six months in hospital, and then faced further health complications through an Acquired Brain Injury.

Life has changed immeasurably for the family since then. William's brain injury requires extensive daily management including physiotherapy, occupational, speech and psychological therapy. He also spends a lot of time in hospital with regular oncology, cardiac and rehab appointments.

Kylie said thankfully Starlight is there for them during stressful times. William is often stuck in the hospital ward, so Captain Starlight really brightens his day.

Despite everything he has to endure, William's a happy, loving boy. Like lots of seven-year-olds he's torn between being an astronaut or a doctor when he grows up! He's very close to his two older brothers and his sister-in-law and loves to play outdoors.

Well, thanks to Starlight supporters, William's outdoor fun has just gone to a whole new level. His Starlight Wish was for a pool slide!

William was over the moon with excitement when he found out his wish had been granted. Kylie said the pool slide will give William endless hours of pure enjoyment and give them all priceless family memories.

"It will mean even more fun in the pool which is fantastic for his physical development," she said.

William couldn't wait to try out his new slide and was the first one down on the day it arrived! He is looking forward to hours of backyard fun in the months and years to come.

A genuine heart-felt thank you. You never think it could be your child, but unfortunately it can and that's where your support really matters, when the unthinkable happens.
