Doing laps for sick kids
"I can achieve anything I put my mind to"
At 12 years old Chloe was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma Cancer. After surgery, 12 months of chemotherapy, and 31 days of radiotherapy, Chloe was left with osteoporosis, permanent nerve damage, and compression fractures in two vertebrae which will never heal.
Suddenly Chloe was no longer able to do all the things she was passionate about, like soccer, swimming and hanging out with her friends and her little sister, Alicia. So when she was told she would be receive a puppy for her Starlight wish, the anticipation helped to distract her from her treatment. She named her puppy Phoenix after the mythical creature - "representing the victory of life over death, having arisen from the flames a winner. Phoenix reminds me daily I can achieve anything I put my mind to."
This year 15-year-old Chloe participated in the Starlight Super Swim and raised money so Starlight can continue to grant wishes that will create special memories for sick kids, just like her. In one month Chloe swam 100km, and more than doubled her fundraising goal by raising over $2,200 for sick kids - what a star!
The challenge was a big one, and Chloe is thankful to her friends and family for their generous donations and supportive messages all the way through. Along the journey Chloe met inspirational people and made new friends (including fellow Super Swimmer and Starlight kid – Jack O'Brien!). Chloe even had a lane named after her at her local pool, and is now enthusiastic about setting new swimming goals for herself!
There are loads of ways you can be like Chloe, and make a difference for sick kids. Find out how you can help!
