Singer-songwriter and dancer

Tim Omaji in Darwin

Singer-songwriter, record producer, dancer, choreographer and magician, Timomatic has an impressive list of titles to his name. Now, he can add Starlight Ambassador.

Tim was born in Nigeria and moved to Australia with his family when he was just 10 months old. From an early age performing was his passion.

"Coming from a musical family, I grew up singing and dancing,' he said. "I remember I was about nine and we started a band with my brother and sisters and I was the percussionist.”

At high school he was nicknamed 'Timomatic' by his friends because of his much loved hip-hop dancing. He went on to attend music school and gained a Diploma in Entertainment, majoring in vocal training.

Tim rose to fame as a contestant on the TV show So You Think You Can Dance in 2009, and in 2011 he appeared as a contestant on Australia's Got Talent. Later that year, he released his first single, "Set It Off" which reached number two on the ARIA Singles Chart and went four times platinum in Australia.

Tim has performed to global audiences and supported leading international artists on tour. In 2013 he returned to Australia's Got Talent, as a popular panel judge. He has achieved wide acclaim in the music industry receiving numerous nominations and awards.

He's also an inspiration to many young people. "When I go back to visit my high school, I say to the kids that I'm living proof you can do it. Dream big and hold on to that dream and work really hard for it!” he said.

Tim has supported Starlight for a number of years now, but it was a recent visit ward round hosted by Captain Starlight in Darwin that sparked his motivation to become more involved.

From my very first visit, I knew I wanted to help and be a part of the organisation. Starlight gives me an incredible opportunity to share positivity and joy to kids facing massive adversities.

Since then, Tim says he's had many great times hanging out with the kids in the Starlight Express Room. Not surprisingly, his visits involve singing and some pretty fancy dance moves with the kids! “To see the kids lighting up and having such a good time is really very special.”

As an artist, Tim loves how Starlight creatively engages with kids. "From Captain Starlight, to Starlight TV broadcasting to kids too sick to leave their hospital beds, it's an innovative approach that's all about making kids smile when they really need it most,” he said.

Tim is always willing to lend his support and we are so thankful for his time, energy and enthusiasm. He was the lead entertainer at last year's Star Ball Darwin fundraising event for sick kids in the Top End and he danced his way into the Sydney Children's Hospital as part of the Starlight Film Festival.

Judging by the smiles on the kid's faces, our hip-hop Ambassador's own brand of fun is helping to brighten the lives of sick kids right across the country.
