Rugby Union Player
International rugby union player Jed Holloway is known for his determination and passion on and off the field.
His impressive rugby career began as a junior club player and he went on to be selected for the Australian Schoolboys side in 2010. He was named Shute Shield Rookie of the Year in 2012 and made his professional rugby debut in 2013.
He represented Australia in the Under 20's and in 2013 was offered his first professional contract.
He currently plays for the NSW Waratahs and was recently announced as captain of the Greater Sydney Rams. Following an impressive 2018 season, he was picked for the Wallabies squad.
Jed attributes this fighting spirit to his brave cousin Liam, who was sadly diagnosed with leukaemia at age nine.
The two were very close growing up and Jed says Liam was like a brother to him. "My parents owned a kiosk in North Wollongong and I remember Liam would come down and work there and we'd go skating, surfing and fishing together," he said.
"Liam fought the illness until he was 20 years old when it finally got the better of him," Jed said.
Over a decade later, Jed carries Liam's fighting spirit with him. "He was a good mentor and had that never give up attitude. He taught me to be a fighter and had such a huge impact on my life."
In Liam's legacy, Jed has inspired many young players on and off the field.
Despite his demanding training regime, Jed is a regular visitor in the Starlight Express Room at the Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick. Jed and his teammates are always a hit with the kids and he says without a doubt, the best part of any visit is seeing the kids smile and the impact Starlight's hospital programs have on families. He especially loves bringing the NSW Waratahs in for a Christmas performance in the Starlight Express Room each year.
As you can imagine, there were even more smiles when Jed was officially named a Starlight Ambassador!
This is such an honour. Having seen what a difference Starlight made to my family when Liam was so ill, I was keen to become more involved with Starlight. They helped our family when we really needed it .Jed
Jed said being involved with Starlight is so rewarding and he loves knowing that he’s helped make a kid's day just that little bit brighter.
"When I was a kid and a footy player came to school, it'd make your day and I want to replicate that for kids in hospital. I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing and helping out families who need it," Jed said.
We'd like to say a big thank you to Jed for helping sick kids fight big battles; we're so proud to call you a Starlight Ambassador!
