Despite his own famous head of hair, Chris Mayne is a fan of wigs! A regular visitor to the Starlight Express Room, the Collingwood FC player is no stranger to the dress up box in a bid to entertain the kids. During his time at former club the Fremantle Dockers, he busked incognito donning a wig to raise money for the club's annual Starlight Purple Haze Game.
The Collingwood FC #16 is known for his performance on the field as much as his commitment to the community. Outside his football career, Chris is a proud Starlight Ambassador and regularly gives his time to fundraise and raise awareness within the local community. Chris was one of three finalists for the 2015 AFL Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award.
Described as an all-round 'good guy,' Chris is the first to get everyone dancing and singing in the Starlight Express Room! He's not afraid to make fun of himself to get a laugh out of the kids. His favourite activity is challenging the kids and Captain Starlight to a game of Smash Bros and Uno - even if his skills aren't up to par!
Chris understands how daunting it can be to face hospital as a child, having experienced it himself when he had to undergo surgery in Perth.
I love how the Starlight Express Room gives kids and families in hospital a place to unwind and de-stress and not think about the stuff they're going through for a moment. Inside the room, they can stop focusing on their pain and treatment, which is a welcome distraction.Chris Mayne
Chris says his role with Starlight gives him the chance to meet some brave and inspiring families.
It's something close to my heart and I find that I'm a big kid as well. So, when I get an opportunity to see the kids in the Starlight Express room or on the wards at the Royal Children's Hospital my aim is just to put a smile on their face. As long as they're smiling by the time I leave I'm pretty happy with that.Chris Mayne
