Captain Starlight visits hospital wards to bring fun & laughter

In every Starlight Express Room, in every kids hospital in Australia, you'll find Captain Starlight creating loads of fun and laughter for kids and their families. But not every child in hospital can come to the Starlight Express Room, so for kids too sick to leave their bed, Captain Starlight brings the fun to them!

Every day, Captain Starlight embarks on Rocket Rounds to deliver bursts of fun and entertainment, brightening up the wards and visiting kids in the emergency department, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and outpatients too.

These ward visits are a really important part of the in-hospital experience, ensuring Captain Starlight is able to spread joy right throughout the hospital. We've also launched Star Wards especially for kids who are in hospital for long stretches at a time. For the kids who are high needs patients, Captain Starlight uses creative talents to create tailored projects and fun initiatives for these kids, aimed at enhancing their skills and providing a more long-term impact.

One Starlight parent, Karen, knows all too well the impact that Captain Starlight's visits have had on her seriously ill child. Karen's 7-year-old daughter Emily was diagnosed with a rare connective tissue disorder at just 18 months old, and has spent all her life in and out of hopsital for treatment. However, she says "Captain Starlight makes hospital a fun place, especially when things aren't going well."

Karen remembers a harrowing time when Emily was five-years-old and waiting for surgery. Unable to eat or leave her ward, she'd been in tears all morning anxious and stressed about her surgery.

Captain Starlight came to her room, and by the time they left she was laughing and happy. It made such a difference. Not only did it cheer her up when she was so miserable, it also put her in a more positive state of mind going into surgery.

Captain Starlight's ward visits have been developed from ongoing research and evaluation into how we can meet the needs of seriously ill children in hospital and maximise our program delivery. In 2013, Starlight worked in partnership with Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC) to undertake research into understanding more about the impact of the Captain Starlight program and the Starlight Express Rooms on children and families. Read the full report here.

Starlight's worked closely with health professionals on the development of these programs, and the feedback has been amazing.

Captain Starlight has not only brought some everyday distraction and happiness to the kids I work with in general, but has offered to assist in distracting when kids undergo potentially painful procedures. Captain Starlight is a gem!
