It's these one-to-one conversations which enable Starlight to spread the word about our essential services supporting seriously ill children and their families.;

Our Starlight All Stars connect us with people who care about brightening the lives of sick kids, through regular monthly donations to Starlight.

Why are there only ongoing monthly donation options - why not one-off?

Starlight is entirely funded by the generosity of the community, so we need a continuous stream of funding to ensure we can meet the growing need for our essential services. Regular monthly donations mean we can budget and plan for long term services that have the greatest impact, and enable us to work towards our goal of providing our services in all children's hospitals by 2020.

Why do you do face-to-face fundraising?

Without face-to-face fundraising, Starlight would not be able to maintain and grow our essential services helping seriously ill children and their families across Australia.

Face-to-face is one of the most cost-effective and efficient forms of fundraising. The new supporters who sign up to make an ongoing monthly donation provide Starlight with a secure income stream which allows us to plan for the long term. Serious illness will never go away, and we require ongoing funding to continue helping the hundreds of thousands of children who are affected by illness every year.

The personal nature of face-to-face recruitment also means we can talk to people who we would otherwise not be able to reach through other methods. We are able to have thousands of conversations with the public, encouraging people to donate. Even if people don't sign up, we are able to spread the word about Starlight's important work.

Why do you outsource this type of fundraising?

Like many charities, we use a professional fundraising organisation for our face-to-face fundraising as these organisations are specialists in this form of fundraising. This has proven to be successful and cost-effective.

Starlight's mission is to brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families. We choose to work with a professional company like GMS that can provide skilled fundraisers who work on our behalf. It means we can focus on what we do best - helping sick kids to forget they're sick, and ensure the money raised is used as effectively as possible.

A specialist, professional face-to-face fundraising agency like GMS can provide the expertise, infrastructure and economies of scale to run a face-to-face fundraising program that we would not be able to achieve at Starlight.

Why don't you use volunteers?

The Fundraisers employed by GMS have a specific skillset and experience in this type of specialist fundraising. Our valuable volunteers have a different set of skills enabling them to do a wonderful job assisting Captain Starlight in the Starlight Express Rooms, assisting at events or working with the Wishgranting team helping to grant Starlight Wishes. This is why we have partnered with GMS who have team members with the right type of skills to carry out this type of fundraising program.

How do I know if a fundraiser is genuine?

Our Starlight All Star fundraisers are individuals who are committed to Starlight's mission to brighten the lives of seriously ill children.

Starlight All Stars will:

  • Be dressed in a yellow Starlight t-shirt with the Starlight logo printed on it
  • Wear an ID badge with the Starlight logo, fundraiser's name, ID number and photo
  • Ask for regular, monthly gifts via direct debit or credit/debit card
  • Be respectful, polite and knowledgeable about Starlight's services
