Lauren's Starlight Wish
A Royal Ball like no other!
9-year-old Lauren has spent her whole life in and out of hospital. She has already had 118 operations and last year alone she spent 28 weeks in hospital.
But thankfully she's found laughter and new friendships in the Starlight Express Room to help cope with those long hospital stays. In fact, no trip to hospital is complete without a visit to the Starlight Express Room for some dress-up fun and games with Captain Starlight. Lauren has made so many friends in hospital she always makes time to pop in to say hi to them.
When Lauren was told she'd be granted her Starlight Wish, she thought long and hard about something special she wanted to do. At first she thought she'd like to meet her pop idol Delta Goodrem (she's a Team Delta fan), but one morning she woke up and said to her mum she knew what she wanted for her Starlight Wish.
She said she'd had a dream and wished to be a Princess and host a Royal Ball for all the sick kids in hospital. She'd even drawn a picture of it!"Lauren's mum, Sue
What made Lauren's Starlight Wish all the more special was that she wanted to share her wish with as many other sick kids as possible. Her mum said that truly was the most important part of the whole wish. So what better venue for Lauren's Royal Ball than the Starlight Express Room at the Children's Hospital at Randwick!
Lauren even designed her own Princess ball gown which was specially made for her by a costume designer. Her mum said it was her dream dress - layers of pink with sparkly Swarovski crystals and of course, a beautiful tiara to complete the princess look. "It was stunning and incredibly regal. I will never forget the sheer delight on Lauren's face as she swished the dress from side to side," Sue said.
On the day of the Princess Ball, Lauren and her best friend from school, Akira, were so excited to find out they were having their hair and make-up professionally done. With tiaras in place, and hair glitterfied, the two princesses arrived to find the Starlight Express Room transformed into a spectacular purple and silver hued ballroom fit for royalty!
Lauren made sure everyone in the "hospital kingdom" was invited. So guests came from all over the hospital to join in the fun of the Ball with games, a photo booth and a very yummy princess cake and cupcakes for all to share. Lauren even hosted her very own royal-themed bingo with Akira.
Princess Lauren loved seeing all her hospital friends again and Captain Starlight (wearing regal purple of course!) kept everyone entertained. She shone like a true princess and could not stop smiling.
Her mum said the whole day was truly everything Lauren had dreamed it would be and more.
For a little girl whose body has been through so much, I'm so grateful that for one day at least, Lauren forgot all that and was able to truly feel as beautiful as a Princess! Thank you Starlight for letting Lauren share her wish with so many sick kids as this was the real essence and beauty of her wish.Lauren's mum, Sue
