Volunteering with Livewire
Inspire sick teens
- Livewire In Hospital: minimum 4 hours per fortnight for a minimum of 12 months
- Livewire.org.au: minimum 2 hours per fortnight for a minimum of 12 months
At night, the Starlight Express Room becomes Livewire - a teen-only hang out where young people can be social, build friendships, feel independent and connect with others who know what they’re going through. It's a place where they can just be teenagers.
Livewire volunteers provide activities that enhance personal development, encourage engagement and foster a sense of normality in a relaxed environment.
Activities are varied and include: making and recording music, creating all kinds of art or working together on a short film.
If teens are unable to leave their ward, our Livewire volunteers take the workshops to them.
Livewire.org.au is an online community designed for young people living with a serious illness, chronic health condition or disability, and their families. It's a safe online space where members can connect and share experiences with others who understand what they’re going through.
Members have access to loads of cool features such as articles, blogs, a chat room, messaging and Livewire TV.
Livewire chat host volunteers moderate sessions, participate in conversations, facilitate activities and ensure everyone is having a safe, fun and positive experience. You can do this from the comfort of your own home, your local Starlight office or wherever you can log in!
Once accepted into the program, volunteers undergo specialised training based on the principles of positive psychology, enabling you to provide the best possible support to sick teens. You can also access ongoing support from your Starlight Volunteer Coordinator.
I have fun with the patients, successfully distracting them from their unfortunate circumstances - it gives you a real sense of purpose and satisfaction.Tim, Livewire volunteer
